Abstract
Protection of water resources in alpine areas in particular of karst aquifers in the Northern Calcareous Alps is of great importance to ensure high quality an sufficient qantity of drinking water. Numerous anthropogenic impacts, such as contaminant infiltration from loval and regional distributed sources can lead to a serious degradation of available water resources. The objectives of the work package "resource protection" were to develop methods, which are suitable to be applied in alpine mountainous areas with their typical geogene, anthropogenic and ecologic boundary conditions, to develop monitoring concepts for water quantity and quality, to apply methods in the pilot area Kaisergebirge and to attempt to transfer methods and concepts to other alpine regions.
